Pilot Astronauts
Raeann Kit-Yee Cheung

Between the 1970s and 1990s, the term “astronaut families” was popularized in Hong Kong and Taiwan, referring to family arrangements in Asia where the fathers remained in their home country to work while the mothers migrated to the west with their children for stability, opportunities, living experiences, and education. With the 50th anniversary of International Women’s Year approaching, Pilot Astronauts celebrates the legacies of early astronaut mothers, their strength, and their humanity.

UPCOMING EVENTS

SATURDAY, JUNE 1 — 3 PM - 5 PM

INDIGO DYEING WORKSHOP WITH MICHAELA BRIDGEMOHAN

Join us at TRUCK for a free Indigo Dyeing Workshop facilitated by Michaela Bridgemohan! 💙 This workshop is appropriate for all skill levels and all ages. No art experience is required. There is a limited capacity of 10 participants, so be sure to register ASAP.

Ahead of the workshop, participants must pick up a DIY kit containing the instructions and materials to prepare two organic cotton bandanas using shibori techniques at home. Then, on June 1st, Michaela will guide participants through the historical and culturally informed practices for indigo dyeing, the preparation of an organic indigo vat, and the process of dyeing the bandanas. Participants will leave with introductory knowledge of shibori resist-dyeing and the ability to prepare an organic indigo vat at home.

Weather permitting, the workshop will take place outside. Please dress appropriately and take into consideration that indigo can be very messy! Wear clothes you don't mind staining. Aprons and gloves will be available for anyone who needs them.
