Using paper and natural reed Xiajing Yan creates cocoon like forms presenting a state of new life like rebirth and reincarnation. Employing the traditional Chinese craft of lantern making these forms self adapt to change and growth, offering a space for incubation, and shelter from the environment. The cocoon drifts as a self-contained organ ready to survive and blossom. These delicate forms are complex in their geometry; pliable, porous and translucent yet posses great internal strength. This contradiction of fragility and strength convey the immigrant experience.
